RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
